Purpose
When managing libraries of related files, it may be convenient to name the files using some kind of numerical ordering. Other times, another consistent naming scheme is more appropriate. However, the data provider or upstream source may use a different naming convention from what is convenient locally. In such situations, there is a need to rename files for organizational purposes.
While it is possible to rename each file by hand, a bulk renaming system can automate this tedious process by following a set of rules. In the simplest case, an ordinal number is simply added to the file name. However, more complex renaming rules can make use of regular expressions to create different output patterns. Local artificial intelligence tools might even be able to take renaming a step further by analyzing each file's content to ensure the resulting names are correct. In any case, TealFiler currently only has the capability to rename one file at a time. Bulk rename support for working with multiple files is a desirable feature.
Scope of Work
Create a bulk rename tool that can rename a selected set of files (or folders) according to naming rules. Start by allowing the files to be numbered sequentially, then add support for regular expressions to increase the power. Design and implement a bulk rename dialog to allow the user easy access to this new feature.
