Online Learning Expectations
This document is part of the syllabus for any distance learning, hybrid, or flex course that I teach. It outlines basic expectations for online learning. The policies here supplement those found in the Coastal Carolina University Distance Learning Policy, which is incorporated by reference.
Basic Technical Skills
To be successful in an online learning environment, you need to be able to do the following things by the time the course starts:
- Be able to send an email with an attachment.
- Be able to upload a file in Moodle.
- Be able to view multimedia files using a Web browser such as Firefox or Chrome.
- Be able to install and run basic software applications.
- Be able to read and follow written documentation.
Activities and Assessments
I use a variety of instructional activities, which are not graded. These include:
- Video lectures and presentations (typically in the form of a narrated screencast)
- Hands-on exercises
- Conceptual exercises
- Readings
- Interactive lessons
For assessment purposes, I use interviews to assess course competencies. Please see the Competency-Based Evaluation page for more information.
Due Dates
Each interview period will have an end date by which interviews are to be completed for that particular interview. This information will be communicated in the course learning management system.
Expectations
As a student in this course, you are expected to:
- Participate in the course regularly.
- Do your work, even if it is not graded.
- Complete your interviews by the deadlines and meet the required competencies.
- Be academically honest.
- Have fun and develop passion for what you do.
You can expect the following from me:
- Fair evaluation of the competencies.
- Feedback provided at the end of each interview.
- Availability for extra help.
