Privacy, Psychology, and the Panopticon

Digital Privacy is a subset of overall privacy. Understanding overall privacy requires digging a bit deeper into the meaning of the word “privacy” and looking at some of the psychology and law literature that defines and explains this broader concept. In this section, we will see why privacy is important for human mental health and personal growth, explore the disconnect between real-life privacy and online privacy, consider the effects of surveillance and how they can be worsened through AI, and understand how intermittent and unpredictable surveillance can lead to self-censorship. Finally, we’ll end the section with a short study of cancel culture.
