In this 2016 South Korean horror film directed by Hong-jin Na, the arrival of a mysterious stranger in a quiet rural village causes suspicion among the villagers. As they begin killing each other for no apparent reason, however, that suspicion turns to panic. When the daughter of the investigating officer falls under the same savage spell, he calls in a shaman to assist in finding the culprit.

Following the screening, Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies faculty members Ron Green, associate professor, and Alan Todd, lecturer, discuss the film’s philosophical themes and implications. This film is shown in Korean with English subtitles.

This film is not rated and may contain content that is inappropriate for children. Parental discretion is advised.

(anime viewing)

Japanese Mythology in Film series
Wednesday, November 29, 2017
4:00 pm - 4:55 pm
Location: AOC2 311

image from Into the Forest of Fireflies' LightBased on a shrine in the Kumamoto Prefecture of Japan, known as Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine, which is dedicated to Izanagi and Izanami from Japanese mythology.

The story of a six-year-old girl named Hotaru Takegawa, who gets lost in a forest inhabited by a yamagami, or mountain spirit, as well as yōkai (strange apparitions from Japanese folklore). She is found by a mask-wearing, human-like entity named Gin, who informs Hotaru that he will disappear forever if he is touched by a human. Gin then leads Hotaru out of the forest. Hotaru returns to visit Gin in the forest over the next few days and they become friends despite the limitations on their interactions. Although at summer's end she must leave Gin to return to the city and her studies, Hotaru promises to return to visit him every summer holiday.

Red Data Girl (anime viewing)

Japanese Mythology in Film series
Wednesday, November 8, 2017
4:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Location: AOC2 310

image from Red Data Girl animeThe story revolves around Izumiko Suzuhara, a 15-year-old girl who was raised at Tamakura Shrine, which is a part of the Kumano Shrines World Heritage Site. She has the power to destroy any electrical device that she touches. Despite being shy, she wants to try living in the city. Her guardian Yukimasa Sagara recommends that she enroll at Hōjō High School in Tokyo accompanied by his son, Miyuki Sagara. Miyuki has trained to become a yamabushi from a young age. While in Tokyo on a middle school field trip, an entity named "Himegami" appears. Izumiko learns that she is a yorishiro (or, more properly, a yorimashi, as she is a possessed person, not object), a vessel for a Shinto spirit known as a kami. She also learns that Miyuki is tasked with protecting her. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Data_Girl

Mushishi (anime viewing)

Japanese Mythology in Film series
Wednesday, November 15, 2017
4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Location: AOC2 311

image from Mushishi anime The story features ubiquitous creatures called Mushi (蟲) that often display what appear as supernatural powers. It is implied that there are many more lifeforms more primitive than "normal" living things such as animals, plants, fungi and bacteria, and Mushi is the most primitive of all. Due to their ethereal nature most humans are incapable of perceiving Mushi and are oblivious to their existence, but there are a few who possess the ability to see and interact with Mushi. One such person is Ginko (ギンコ), the main character. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushishi
