Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Angelina Jolie, The Changeling is a compelling story based on true life events.
In 1928, a kidnapping of a young boy, Walter Collins, (played by Gattlin Griffith) occurred in Los Angeles. The event attracted nationwide attention when a radio preacher, (John Malkovich), uses the situation for his own platform agenda against the supposedly corrupt LAPD.
Ultimately, when the boy is found a few months later, the mother, Christine Collins, played by Jolie, is dumbfounded to find it is not her child they have delivered to her. A reluctant police investigation ensues at the relentless urging of Christine and the truth begins to unravel.
Under the multi-winning Oscar direction of Clint Eastwood, The Changeling proves to be another engrossing and well developed film. Oscar winner, Malkovich, delivers a powerful performance as the radio evangelist that takes on the LAPD but it is Academy Award winner, Angelina Jolie that truly carries the movie as the distraught but determined mother who will stop at nothing to find her child and bring about justice for others in her situation.
Of personal interest to those at Coastal Carolina University is the fact that one of our alumni plays a major roll in this movie. Michael J. Kelly, a graduate of Coastal Carolina University plays the part of Detective Lester Ybarra in the film. Detective Lester Ybarra is instrumental in helping solve the case of the missing boy and bringing justice for Christine.
Michael J. Kelly, originally from Lawrenceville, Ga., graduated from Coastal Carolina University with a degree in Theater in 1992. He has had parts in many television shows and movies including Dawn of the Dead in 2004, CSI: Miami, The Sopranos, Fringe, and Law & Order.
