Geologic and climatic history - Relevance to the present

Question to answer via essay post to eBoard and to discuss in class Jan 24th:

1) Based upon Valentine & Moores 1972 paper (on reserve in library, also a copy on my door) discuss how long term geological processes influence global marine biodiversity.  Find on your own another resource that discusses climate change influences upon marine life.  Conjecture as to how the concepts discussed in these papers may apply in smaller spatial and temporal scales to controls upon benthic organisms in shallow coastal and estuarine environments.
