NEWS! NEWS! NEWS! 17 January 2010. My time for genealogy and for maintaining this website continues to be limited, so not very much has changed over the past year and a half. My research continues to center around Lawrence and Butler counties. Some data have been added to both those pages, and a few things have been added in other counties as well. I am still considering removing counties without data: Clearfield, Elk, and McKean are currently in the crosshairs. I welcome questions, corrections, and of course new data about King families in Western PA. I have seen this website cited in online databases, particularly at Rootsweb. That is very poor genealogical practice as there is no original source material at this site. Please cite the original sources if you can. And PLEASE, don't post a list of names without dates and places. That's worse than useless! We're all in this together. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE YOUR INFORMATION! Purpose: The function of this web site is to gather and disseminate historical and genealogical information on families with the family surname of KING who have at one time or another taken up residence in one of the western Pennsylvania counties listed below and who lived there long enough to have appeared in the public records of that place. As you know, if you are a King family researcher, our surname is quite a common one. It is also difficult to search, as entering the term "King" into a search engine often returns unwanted hits like King Louis XIV, King County, Washington, and even words like walKING and talKING. (This last problem can sometimes be avoided by typing a space in front of the name " King" when you enter it into the search engine.) Searching in the public records for King can also be an exercise in perseverance, as there are Kings to be found just about everywhere, usually in large numbers and usually unrelated to the family being researched! Most of the information here is stuff I've found in my own research. Some of it has been contributed by others, which I encourage. I hope that sharing it will make our task a little easier. The Counties
Note: People are placed into counties based primarily upon where they are found in the census. This doesn't always work, however, so sometimes placement is determined by which county history published a bio of the person, etc. Other Resources At This Website

Disclaimer: If you're looking for a "pretty" website, you're in the wrong place. Don't expect a lot of fancy formatting, frames, tables, graphics, music, etc. The aim of these pages is to be accurate and to load as quickly as possible! I cannot guarantee the accuracy of any information to be found at this site, however, as much of it is derived from secondary sources. You should regard any information you find here as being undocumented (i.e., possibly wrong). Cite me at your own risk! All the links are guaranteed to have worked the last time I tried them. If you find any broken ones, please let me know. Comments: If you would like to make comments on or corrections to this site, please contact me at the e-mail address given at the bottom of this page. If you are interested in contributing information, PLEASE DO. If you prefer the family group sheet format, a blank copy of the family group sheet is located here. You should be able to open it directly in WordPad or any other text editor. Please tell me how good your information is; i.e, from what sorts of sources is it derived. No information will be posted that does not list sources of some sort, even if it's only "family legend." Of course, I would also be happy to accept census, deed, and probate extractions, etc. I make no assurances of any kind to anyone that his or her information will be added to this site at all quickly.
1) advertisements or commercial material, 2) information on people with surnames other than King, 3) information on people who did not live in one of the counties listed above or their ancestors or descendants, 4) information on living individuals [latest date of birth: 1920], 5) lists of names without dates and places, or 6) undocumented information. I will not post your e-mail address, because some people change their e-mail more often than they change their socks, and I will not post your name along with the material you send unless you explicitly ask me to. More to come. I still have more data to post, so please check back! This site is a work in progress.
