Notes on Mary King who Married Obediah Garwood This family apparently originated in Burlington Co., NJ, and eventually turned up in Crawford Co., PA. The family was apparently documented in a book by Ruth Inskeep called Meet the Families of Inskeep and Garwood (1975), which I have not seen. According to a post at the Garwood family message board at Rootsweb: Ruth INSKEEP's _Meet the Families of INSKEEP and GARWOOD_, 1975, page 380, states the following: Homer BALDWIN (Caroline GARWOOD, James, John, Isaac, Noah, Samuel, John, William, Thomas), born in Crawford Co., PA, 25 Dec 1885; d. 8 Jan 1969, was a son of Alvirus and Caroline (GARWOOD) BALDWIN. Mr. BALDWIN spent many years in collecting data on the GARWOOD family and especially this branch (John GARWOOD b 1675). His papers have been placed with the Crawford Co., PA, Historical Society. http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.garwood/115/mb.ashx Some Rootsweb dbs make Mary King, wife of Obediah Garwood, the daughter of Joseph King and Mary Simcock of NJ. This is highly doubtful. Quaker meeting records (which I have not seen) apparently have their daughter Mary married to someone else. Therefore, we must say that Mary King's ancestry is unknown. The following GenForum post is relevant to this: The minutes of Kingwood Monthly Meeting in New Jersey (where Joseph King and Mary Simcock resided) of 12 Feb 1756 record the marriage intention of David Marsh and Mary King, Jr and the minutes of 8 Mar 1756 record that the marriage was accomplished. She is probably referred to as Mary King, Junior because her mother was also Mary King - Mrs. Mary (Simcock) King. The Kingwood Minutes also record only two children for David and Mary: Joseph 1756 and Phillip 1759 Mary (King) Marsh is not named in her father's will in 1764, so it is likely that she died soon after the birth of Phillip. It is likely David Marsh died soon also. No removals for David Marsh or Mary Marsh are recorded in Kingwood but a Phillip Marsh was granted a certificate from Kingwood to New Garden Monthly Meeting (North Carolina) in 1791 Apparently the marriage of a Mary King and Obediah Garwood occurred in 1756 in Burlington Monthly Meeting. Some have mistakenly identified her as the daughter of Joseph King and Mary Simcock, but she is more likely some other Mary King. Here is why: No marriage intention was recorded in Kingwood meeting as would have happened had it been Joseph King's daughter who was marrying Obediah Garwood. Mary (King) Garwood lived until about 1823 and so would likely have been named in Joseph King's will if she were his daughter. Obviously Mary, daughter of Joseph King and Mary Simcock, was not married to both as the marriages and children overlap. http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?King::garwood::461.html Her husband Obediah Garwood is said to have been born in Evesham, Burlington Co., NJ, in 1729. Obediah had a younger brother Noah Garwood, b.c. 1740, d. 1800, who married Mary Engle (still referencing the Inskeep book). Their children: 23. Noah GARWOOD (Samuel2, John1), born abt 1740; died 1800. He married in 1763 Mary ENGLE, daughter of John ENGLE and Hannah MIDDLETON. Notes for Noah GARWOOD MFIGs p 381. Notes for Mary ENGLE Married 4 mo. 14, 1763. Children of Noah GARWOOD and Mary ENGLE were as follows: 57 i Noah GARWOOD (Jr.). [Note: Obediah Garwood was deeded land in Crawford Co. in 1797 but apparently died in Fayette Co., 1798, before he could move there. Or possibly this is the son, who did eventually live in Crawford Co.] Noah Garwood occurs in the NJ tax lists for Burlington Co. in 1774. Obediah Garwood never occurs (at the ancestry.com index anyway). Some of their descendants turned up in Crawford Co. as follows. The evidence of the censuses suggests that Isaac Garwood was in Crawford Co., PA, by 1840 and also occurs in 1850 but has disappeared in the 1860: 1850, Sadsbury Twp., Crawford Co. (so faded as to be nearly unreadable) Isaac Garwood, 76, b. NJ, and Rebecca, 74, b. PA, and family [Note: one internet source of unknown reliability says Isaac's first wife was a cousin, Rebecca Garwood, who d.c. 1810 in Burlington Co., NJ] John Garwood, said to be Isaac's son, was b. 18 June 1798 in PA, and apparently died in Crawford Co., PA. One source says in 1851, but I cannot find him in the 1850 census. He is said to have married Anna Hill, dau. of William Hill and Ruth Paden. [William Hill was supposedly b. in NJ but came to Crawford co., PA, possibly via Fayette Co., PA, very early. See rootsweb db 9100 for extensive notes.] Anna appears in 1860: Anna Garwood, age 58, b. PA, is in Sadsbury Twp., in hh of Silus Garwood. According to an obituary published in the New Castle (PA) News, 10 Jn 1922, they were the parents of Mary Ann Garwood: Pulaski Township Woman Dies At Age Of Ninety-three Years Mrs. Mary Ann Porter, aged 93 years, the last member of a pioneer family of Lawrence county, died Monday evening at 6:30, January 9, 1922, at her home in Pulaski township, near the Number Five school building, after an illness of ten days due to complications. Mrs. Porter was one of the oldest and most highly respected women in the community. She was born September 3 [possibly 8], 1829 in Crawford county, the daughter of John and Anna H[ill] Garwood, and had been a resident of this county for many years. Her husband was John Porter (unknown ancestry), who was b.c. 1827 in PA and d. 1906 in Lawrence Co., PA (executor's notice, letters testamentary to Ella Porter, New Castle News, 11 & 18 July, 1 & 8 Aug, possibly other dates as well). The marriage occurred shortly before the 1850 census, possibly 1849. Their children: 1) Newell, b. 1851 in PA, mar. Emma Kerr, went to Colorado 2) an unknown child apparently died young 3) Edwin, b. 1855 in PA, d. 1937 in Lawrence Co., PA, mar. Elizabeth Lockhart 4) Leroy, b.
