Marsh restoration at Sandpiper Pond, Huntington Beach State Park. Activities include long-term monitoring of community change following the opening of an inlet to the ocean. Phragmites australis is on the decline and typical marsh species are on the increase.



Rare and carnivorous plants at the ecotone of Carolina bays and adjacent pine savannas. Research focuses on patterns of distribution, population biology and physiological ecology. Most of this work is done at Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve, just 9 miles from CCU.


Effects of prescribed fire on the herp fauna at Sandy Island. Ancillary projects include effects of fire on structure and composition of wetland and longleaf pine communities. This project is funded by The Nature Conservancy.

 


 

 

Long-term change in salt marsh communities. Activities include monitoring of plants and snails in a series of high marsh plots established in 1998.


 

Epiphytic communities on cypress trees growing in tidal swamps. The goal of this project is to characterize the role of epiphytes in community and ecosystem processes of tidal swamps along the Waccamaw River.

 

 

Legacies of historical land use in South Carolina rice plantations. This project focuses on The Oaks, one of the oldest plantations now within the holdings of Brookgreen Gardens.
